2013 TCC SuperSprint

Postby DAZDA » Wed May 29, 2013 1:18 pm

Having acquired a dedicated track car (2001 Mazda RX-7) late last year and finally finding the time to get it sorted, I decided my first event in it would be the 2013 Thornleigh Car Club (TCC) Super Sprint at Wakefield Park Raceway. For those that don’t know, a Super Sprint is like a series of Qualifying Sessions and the overall winner is the person who sets the fastest time of the day.

The first two sessions went pretty well, despite having to adapt quickly to a new car, struggling to get reasonable tyre temperature on the very cold track surface and trying to find clear space on the track, but these are all part of the challenge that is motorsport. Each session consisted of only 4 timed laps which meant I really had to focus on the core aspects of getting good lap times. By the third and fourth runs, the track had warmed up a little and I put more effort into warming the tyres in the first two laps before trying to put in a quick lap. This helped, so I was able to get a bit more out of myself and the car, and managed a PB at Wakefield (1m 07.47s).

Motorsport can be fickle, but this time we had a good run and the car held up. Despite the big field of 77 cars and some quick competition at the front, we came away with 1st in the 4C class and 1st Outright.

Event highlights included;
Enjoying a good fun, well-run, great value-for-money event
No major issues with the new (for me) car
Getting a win for a Rotary Engine powered car!

As with all levels of motorsport from grassroots to F1, it can’t be achieved without support from key people and businesses. I would like to thank the following;

The Flag marshals, scrutineers, scorers, and other officials – without people like these we would not get to have fun days like this. Thank you for your generosity.
Jen, Simon & Dad - thanks for all your help and support on the day.
Capital Steering and Suspension – Peter & Julie for their continued support
Northwest Tyres - Fyshwick – Sam and the boys for the tyre fitting
C & G Signs – Clive for the stickers on short notice
Renée – My beautiful wife, thank you for being so understanding about my time-consuming, motor-racing related habits.
Finally - Fifth Gear Motoring – for all those extra skills, tips and tricks over the years to help with going faster.

It was a good day. Can't wait to get Jen's car out there as well. I think you were the only rotor on the day?

Todd, if our great overlord would allow attachements to posts it would be easier... but apparently the REACT server has limited space.

And I don't have a picasa, etc., account. :wtf:

Very nice toy! Most jealous. Is it getting vinyl wrapped? And will you bring it out to the hillclimb?

You bet. Almost a shame, but on the other hand, not a shame all! :drive:

Thanks Todd. :)

Not any time soon. Maybe a few small stickers of those that help with running costs (see my signature).

Toddski wrote:And will you bring it out to the hillclimb?
Maybe, although the hillclimb is a bit too tight and twisty for my liking.

Mine is Snow White Pearl Mica and has EBD, etc... Apparently Mazda did a second smaller production run. Below is a quote from another forum (for what it's worth).

Gomez from FDRX7.com wrote:Okay, a little more info on the version VI RZ.

At the end of the year 2000, Mazda had produced 175 Snow White Pearl Mica RZ's.

After production resumed in January 2001, they made another 150.

Total production number.... 325.

Mazda's October 2000 press release stated that they would only make 175 version VI RZ's. My theory on why that turned out to be wrong is this....dollars (or more correctly, yen!!).

Although production actually started in September, Mazda spent the whole month of October 2000 churning out RZ's. Of the 271 cars they made that month, 168 were RZ's. My guess is that the demand for the cars from the dealers was so high, Mazda decided to continue production into 2001.

The success of the RZ ultimately led to the production of the Spirit R.....

Cheers,

Gomez

Had a run again this year. Managed a PB = 1m06.700s :drive: 10psi, stock turbos, stock intercooler, stock manifolds, stock brakes. Only real mods = cage, coilovers, slicks and 3" exhaust.

Thanks to Jen and Simon for their support. :D

Can't upload pdfs. Troll Natsoft if you want to see the results.
